Down Syndrome how the NDIS and Bauerfeind provide support

Approximately one in every 700 births in Australia will be a child with Down Syndrome, a genetic condition which is caused when there is a third copy of chromosome 21 during conception. With the NDIS providing such an incredible service, and with Bauerfeind recently becoming a registered service provider, we wanted to discuss how the NDIS and Bauerfeind provide support for those with Down Syndrome.

Down Syndrome and health

It is important to note that Down Syndrome (DS) is not an illness, but rather a genetic condition that results in a unique set of physical features and in some cases, a relatively slowed physical and intellectual development.

While social awareness and public resources have greatly improved for people with DS over the past 50 years, there are still a wide range of challenges faced. One is an increased likelihood to develop health problems across a range of areas as diverse as the people who have it.

Some of the more common issues include hearing and visual impairments, heart problems and joint issues.

Due to the prevalence of sensory impairments and social stigma, many people with DS end up with multiple health problems that remain undiagnosed and untreated, and this can cause a cycle to occur that negatively affects the person and has a devastating effect on both physical and mental health.

How the NDIS provides support

As of September 2019, over 10,000 people with DS were registered with the NDIS, and that figure has increased as the program has grown and continued to become more accessible.

Down Syndrome is one of the most common disabilities covered by the NDIS, which means that more Australians with DS have access to resources and support structures to enjoy rich and fulfilling lives.

The NDIS can be overwhelming to navigate and to find the how it can best assist you with your needs. Thankfully, with plan management available, as well as support from various carers, therapists and NDIS approved suppliers, people with DS aren’t in it alone.

Here are three great tips to make the most of your NDIS plan and to help manage life with Down Syndrome.

Early Intervention

Early intervention and health management planning is the most successful way to minimise the negative effects and risks brought on by DS. Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) is a process that sets you up with an Early Childhood Partner to work alongside you and your child to access services and supports within your community that suit your child in their unique condition. This is accessible through the NDIS, full details here: How ECEI works

Work opportunities

Whether it’s full or part-time work, volunteering with an organisation or being active in the community - being involved in activities and contributing to society, bring great satisfaction and meaning, regardless of if you have DS or not. Unfortunately, people with DS often find it difficult to get work for a variety of reasons, such as a lack of confidence, social stigma or accessibility.

The NDIS provides support in a number of ways, but the key focus is using resources to help you set goals. Funding and assistance to pursue those goals, through various programs and organisations. And ongoing support to help both you and your employer. Speak to your plan manager for more details.

How Bauerfeind provides support

Down Syndrome can lead to other health issues which may require medical assistance in the form of pharmaceuticals, therapy treatment, supports and medical aids. Even for people with DS who don’t have health issues, life doesn’t stop happening and an injury or unrelated condition can still put you out of action.

Through your NDIS plan you can subsidise, or in many cases fully cover, the costs of any assistant required. By speaking to your plan manager, therapist or an NDIS approved provider, you can ensure you’re getting the best assistance you can without worrying about cost, whether it’s a brace, specialist consultation or medication.
