WHY SHOULD I WEAR A KNEE SUPPORT DURING ATHLETICS?

Track and field or athletics injuries are very common as the body is pushed to the limit, often in short, sharp spurts.

The most common types of knee injuries when performing athletics include ACL, MCL and LCL injuries, dislocated shoulder, thigh strain, knee ligament tear and bursitis knee.

Wearing a Bauerfeind brace or knee support can minimise your chances of injury by providing enhanced stability, medical-grade compression and assist to reduce unwanted lateral knee movement.

Bauerfeind knee braces help to promote blood flow with the use of medical grade compression, something not found when using cheap neoprene sleeves and braces. Protect your knee joints so you can nail your high jump, long jump, sprints and hurdles.

WHAT EXERCISES SHOULD I DO FOR KNEES?

It’s good to complete leg exercises to strengthen the muscles. Straight leg raises, hamstring curls and wall squats are good beginner exercises. If you have knee pain, make sure to see a doctor before starting to do exercises.

HOW TO TREAT A TRACK AND FIELD KNEE INJURY?

We recommend visiting a physiotherapist for treatment and advice on treating common running injuries. They may recommend the following treatments for further athletics injuries.
  • Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. A good physiotherapist can assist with the recovery however prevention is always better than cure.
  • Medial Collateral Ligament injury.  This occurs when the (valgus) force is too great for the ligament to resist and the ligament is overstretched. Treatment of an MCL injury varies depending on its severity. Always consult a physiotherapist to receive a full diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Bursitis Knee. If you experience swelling and painful motion of the knee attend to it with the RICE method and anti-inflammatory medications. We recommend seeking further guidance from a physiotherapist.

Play it safe: Consult a doctor if you experience unusually intense and persistent tendonitis pain.
