WHY SHOULD I WEAR A KNEE BRACE WHILE HORSE RIDING?

Riding a horse is hard on your knees. The knees are designed to move front to back. When horse riding, we compress our knees against the horse's barrel, creating a side-to-side stress on the joint.

Over time, this causes inflammation in the joint and degradation of the cartilage.

Wearing a Bauerfeind brace or knee support can minimise your chances of injury. They provide enhanced stability and improved recovery through medical-grade compression.

We recommend wearing the Sports Knee Support to aid in preventing knee injuries and improving recovery.

Suppose you are suffering from a knee injury and want to return to riding. In that case, we recommend wearing the GenuTrain S. It assists with knee stabilisation and reduces unwanted lateral knee movement.

Bauerfeind knee braces promote blood flow with medical-grade compression, something not found in cheap neoprene sleeves and braces. Protect your knee joints so you can enjoy equestrian sports.

KNEE BRACES FOR PROPRIOCEPTION

Take a look at NBATA athletic trainers explaining the proprioceptive benefits of Bauerfeind knee braces.

"Proprioceptors help detect stretch, compression, vibration and pressure. All these messages come together and are analysed by your brain, giving you a sense of awareness of your body and its movement within space."

Succeeding at horse riding relies on gaining awareness of your body to improve performance and prevent injuries.

WHY DO I FEEL PAIN IN MY KNEES WHEN I AM HORSE RIDING?

Pain arises due to the prolonged compression of the knee against the horse's barrel, which causes lateral stress on the joint. Over time, this will result in instability in your structures and may increase your risk of inflammation and injury. Make sure to seek medical attention should this occur.

HOW TO TREAT A HORSE RIDING INJURY?

We recommend seeking treatment from a physiotherapist for treating a horse riding injury. They may recommend one of the following treatments.
  • Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. A good physiotherapist can assist with recovery; however, prevention is always better than a cure.
  • Arthritis of the Knee. Non-surgical treatment options for severe knee arthritis include physiotherapy exercises, ice or heat application, and supportive devices.
  • Jumper's Knee. This is commonly known as Patellar tendonitis. Rarely does this condition require surgery. It can generally be treated using a combination of anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen) and exercise. A corticosteroid injection may also be used.

Play it safe: Consult a doctor if you experience unusually intense and persistent knee pain.
