Best Knee Braces For Skiing

WHY SHOULD I WEAR A KNEE BRACE WHEN SKIING?

Knee injuries account for a third of all skiing related injuries with most of these related to ligament sprains, tears and ruptures. A diagnosis should be made with the help of a trained physiotherapist.

Poor skiing technique or incorrect landing from a skiing jump can be a cause of knee injuries. ACL tears are common when skiers are trying to stand up to try and prevent an unavoidable fall, called a phandom foot phenomenon.

To prevent or avoid knee injuries when skiing, we recommend wearing Bauerfeind knee braces which help to promote the blood flow through the 3D weave medical grade compression.

This is something which is not found in simple neoprene sleeves or cheaper braces. The added support from a brace will help stabilise your joint without limiting your ability to enjoy your next black run or slalom ski race.

WHAT IS THE BEST KNEE SUPPORT TO USE WHEN SKIING?

If you feel niggles in your knee or have been diagnosed and a knee brace recommended as part of your treatment, choosing the right knee brace is key to a speedier rehabilitation journey and reduction in pain. Choosing the right knee brace will give you peace of mind while you engage in skiing.

The side to side movements of your legs during skiing is very harsh on your knees. The best kind of knee support is one that grips your knee cap to prevent movement, as well as being breathable and comfortable on your skin.

The GenuTrain S is a good knee support to prevent skiing related injuries. The joint splints guide the knee, providing lateral movement support while keeping the area stable. This improves sensorimotor function for maximum movement control.

SKI CROSS CHAMPION WEARS BAUERFEIND KNEE BRACES TO TREAT 3 KNEE INJURIES

Elite athletes and skii champions use German-made Bauerfeind products to prevent and treat knee injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament injuries, knee sprain and meniscus tears.

"At first, I couldn't believe it's another cruciate ligament tear! Being an athlete and watching from the sidelines and not being able to participate is awful", says Andrea. Check out this video to see how Bauerfeind knee braces changes the life of ski champion Andrea Limbacher.

HOW TO TREAT A SKIING INJURY?

We recommend visiting a physiotherapist for treatment and advice on treating common ski related injuries like knee injuries and skier's thumb. They may recommend the following treatments.
    • Strains or Sprains. Many sprains and strains can be treated with the RICE method: Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. A good physiotherapist can assist with the recovery however prevention is always better than cure.
    • Medial Collateral Ligament injury.  This occurs when the (valgus) force is too great for the ligament to resist and the ligament is overstretched. Treatment of an MCL injury varies depending on its severity. Always consult a physiotherapist to receive a full diagnosis and treatment plan.
    • Ligament Tearing. Ligament tears will generally always require surgery. A torn ligament rebuild uses a tissue graft, as the ligament will not generally heal properly otherwise. Surgery can be minimally invasive however these injuries may take considerable time to heal.
